The Family Room Challenge: Optimizing TV Viewing

Case Study: Creating Comfort with an Above-the-Fireplace TV Installation

In the last several years, home entertainment has transcended the ordinary and entered a world of unprecedented lifelike audio and video. 4K HDR TVs deliver stunning images to nearly every room; crystal-clear audio provides the defining touch.

Of course, the most common space for a cutting-edge television is the family room. A multipurpose space used for socializing, video gaming, sporting events, movie nights, or just relaxing, it is the home’s beating heart. The challenge lies in setting up the seating to provide the best viewing for everyone present.

At Avidia, we recently completed a project for a client in Highland Park, IL, who wanted a large TV above a fireplace. This placement created the same type of challenge: how to produce the best viewing in a space not optimally designed for a TV. Here, we’ll explore the solution and the technology that provides optimal viewing, no matter the location.

The TV Placement Challenge

Our client wanted a 75-inch TV installed above their fireplace. The challenge was the height, which did not provide the best viewing angle. Additionally, this would be the primary TV in the home. How could our technicians create a comfortable space that could provide hours of entertainment and allow everyone to view the TV from an angle that didn’t cause neck strain or discomfort?

The Solution

The solution appeared in the form of a MantelMount TV hanger—specifically, the MantelMount Pro Series MM860. This low-profile automated robotic mount smoothly and quietly drops the TV down by 32 inches from its original position, creating a much more comfortable viewing angle.

Its unique functionality also allows positioning the TV toward the kitchen, enabling people to view it while making a meal or tune into the news while enjoying their morning coffee or tea.

The Installation and Integration

The wood finish on the wall added an additional challenge to the project, as installing this robotic mount required cutting into the existing wood fireplace. Electrical preparation and the installation of video wiring took place inside the wall.

We also wanted a solution that integrated easily with the home’s Control4 home automation platform. This integration enables effortless control from the same user-friendly device that manages their other connected systems, such as lighting, motorized shades, climate, and entertainment devices.

The Outcome

Installing this motorized TV mount creates a TV that effortlessly lowers and swivels, bringing it to eye level for a comfortable viewing experience. By integrating it with Control4, family members can manage the program selections, volume, and TV positioning, all from the same control device.

A patented multi-axis hub and proprietary software allow the TV to lower and swivel in one quick, barely audible motion. The system can also detect when the TV is turned on and automatically adjust it to the favored position, delivering the highest level of comfort and picture quality.

With today’s technology, a TV can be placed in almost any room, providing an optimal viewing experience and ideal home entertainment. To learn more about integrating the latest technology into your family room design or to schedule a complimentary consultation, contact Avidia today.
